Chapter 2 - At Shelby College

This chapter tells the story of the emergence of an Episcopal congregation at Shelbyville, Kentucky, attached to the Diocese of Kentucky through its Seminary, Shelby College, beginning in 1840 and continuing through 1858 when the local congregation formed its own parish. Shelby College offered a chapel, an organ, ordained clergy and attachment to the Diocese. Local people joined the faculty and students for worship services.

Chapter 3 - A House of Worship, A Home

Tells the story of the separation of the local congregation from Shelby College, request to the Diocese of Kentucky to form a parish, describes the search for property in Shelbyville, lists earliest members of the congregation, the first priest of the parish, and taking a leap of faith to build a church.

 Chapter 4 - A Gothic Revival Jewell

This chapter tells the story of the construction of the brick Rural Gothic church at the corner of Third and Main Streets in Shelbyville in 1865 just as the Civil War was coming to a close. It also describes the earliest glass pantographs and then the addition of stained glass windows. And it describes the Victorian furnishings within the church. In 1965 Bessie Todd Hall was the first expansion. And in 1985 a catastrophic fire took out the chancel and much of the roof. Barnett Hall served as the 2nd expansion, and the final expansion was purchase and rennovation of the Fellowship Hall.

Chapter 5 - A Church is its People

This chapter starts with an essay about the Value of a Small Church, then profiles each of the priests serving at St. James from 1938-2013. The chapter ends with a photo essay of parishioners and the various activities -- serving, giving, fellowship and fun -- through the years.

Chapter 6 - Children of the Parish

This chapter is a photo essay of various Childrens activities through the years at St. James Parish. It covers Youth Groups, Church School, Vacation Bible School, Camp and Retreats, Trips, Picnics and just having fun.

Chapter 7 - The Sounds of Music

This chapter tells the history of music at St. James Parish from its earliest days at Shelby College, through to the special choir events of 2011. It describes various organs, and organists at the small church, the formation of choirs and choir vestments over the years. It tells the increased use and variety of music with the addition of Dr. Paul Salmon as organist and music direction since 1999. And it shows photos of the choirs and choir events over the years

Chapter 8 - Outreach Ministries to the Community, the World, Lore and Legends of St. James Parish

This is the revised final chapter of the Illustrated History of St. James Shelbyville. It features the outreach ministries as well as the many interviews with our old-timers that provided stories, facts, photos, and legends, many humorous.  The book continues with a number of appendicies listing various priests, vestries, choir directors and organists, delegates to Annual Convention and geneological listings from our registers.
